Our Committees

Murdock PTA runs on the energy, talent and time of parents just like you. Our committees are how that energy gets organized into events, programs, communications and the hundred small things that make this school feel like a community.

Whether you want to lead something, support something or just find out where you might fit, this is the right place to start.

Browse the descriptions below and fill out our interest form when something catches your eye. Someone will follow up personally. Each role is supported by one of our executive committee members.

Co-Presidents

  • Legislative/Advocacy: Stay informed on legislation that affects children and schools, and occasionally sharing updates with our community. You can represent Murdock families on education policy issues at the local, state and national level. It is a great fit for a parent who follows education policy and wants a meaningful way to put that interest to work.
  • Awards: Awards bring recognition and funding to our school, and this role makes sure we show up for them every year. This team documents and submits PTA in Action award nominations on behalf of Murdock. It is a focused, behind-the-scenes contribution with a real impact on what Murdock is able to accomplish.

VP Communications

  • Communications: We want to spread the word about our students, events, teachers & staff, local businesses and the community we build together. This team will partner with every committee and with school administration to tell Murdock's story well. To help share these stories, we are inviting more voices to collaborate and share the load. You can take on as many or as few pieces as your schedule allows. It can be one newsletter blurb or a full event campaign.
    • We are looking for writers, designers and photographers at any experience level.
    • If you have communications, marketing or creative skills and want a flexible way to put them to work, this committee for you.
    • We plan in Monday.com, work in Canva for Nonprofits, and distribute across email, web, print and more.
  • Technology: Keep the infrastructure that powers Murdock PTA running smoothly behind the scenes, including our website, Google Workspace for Nonprofits, Monday.com, Canva, and our communications platform. You'll also support volunteers and parents who have questions or need a hand navigating our tools. The day-to-day tends to be episodic rather than constant. The Technology Chair also plays a key role in an active migration project as we evaluate and transition our communications tools. If you like solving problems quietly and keeping things running well, this is a good fit for someone who wants to contribute real expertise without a heavy ongoing time commitment.
  • Social Media: Cultivate Murdock PTA's presence across Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, with two to three posts per week supporting our event campaigns, community moments and PTA programs. The role works closely with the Communications Committee to keep content coordinated across channels. The chair also partners directly with Murdock administration to coordinate messaging on the school marquee.

VP Fundraising

  • Corporate Sponsorships: Be Murdock PTA's face to the local business community, building relationships with local businesses and inviting them to invest in our school. Their support funds real things: programs, resources, and experiences that benefit every student and teacher. You will work closely with the VP Fundraising to define a strategy and timeline that works for you. Most outreach happens over the summer and at the start of the school year, so the commitment is front-loaded rather than year-round. The businesses you bring on board also have the opportunity to engage with our community in person at events like Fall Festival and Screen on the Green.
  • Membership: This role runs our annual membership drive and is often one of the first PTA faces a new Murdock family meets. You'll welcome and connect families at key events like Meet and Greet and Kindergarten registration. PTA membership is our primary source of funding for the programs and resources that support our students, teachers and staff. The time commitment is relatively light and front-loaded at the start of the school year, with one small additional push at the start of spring semester.
  • Spirit Wear: We hold two ordering windows per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. We have an established vendor relationship, a documented process and designs ready to go. You will have everything you need before you start. It is a visible role with a manageable lift that includes coordinating distribution to families. There is something genuinely satisfying about seeing Murdock Mustangs repping their school around the community.
  • Yearbook Liaison: Coordinates online sales and distribution and makes sure the right information gets to the right people on time. You'll partner with the internal creative team on deadlines and needs for lovelines, 5th grade dedications and orders, and stay in touch with parents to keep the yearbook process running smoothly.
  • School Supply Kits: This is a brand new program that takes the back-to-school scramble off Murdock families' plates. The chair coordinates grade-specific supply lists in the winter and oversees kit distribution at Meet and Greet. It is one of our most straightforward roles, and the payoff for families is immediate and real.
  • Chick-fil-A Breakfast: Our students and staff look forward to our monthly breakfasts in the school cafeteria. The chair manages scheduling, ordering with our local Chick-fil-A, prints order slips, and oversees the morning event. Plan on roughly two hours per event, once a month.

VP Events

  • Staff Appreciation: Let our teachers, staff, administrators and bus drivers know how much they are valued through luncheons, breakfasts, snack bars and surprise treats throughout the school year. We host four to five events each year, with about six to eight hours of planning per event. This is a committee that genuinely benefits from more hands, and the work is as fun as it is meaningful. If you love celebrating people, this one is for you.
  • Fall Traditions: Organize and support the East Cobber Parade, Veterans Day Breakfast and Thanksgiving Lunch. Each event requires roughly three to four hours of prep. This is a flexible commitment with a front-row seat to some of Murdock's most community-driven moments.
  • Festivals: Bring two of Murdock's most anticipated events to life: Fall Festival and Screen on the Green. The work spans vendor coordination, activity planning, communications and day-of execution. It is a true team effort, and the kind of role where you can see exactly what your work makes possible.
  • International Night: Every February, our community comes together to share food, music, games, and cultural traditions from around the world. The committee coordinates participating families, manages event logistics, and brings to life an evening that reflects the diversity that makes Murdock so special.
  • Winter Wonderland: This year's expanded format, with art and crafts, hot chocolate, a photo booth, and more, set a new bar for what this event can be. The incoming chair gets to build on that momentum or take it in an entirely new direction. If you love creating memorable experiences for families, this one is worth a closer look.
  • 5th Grade Picnic: Plan and implement the 5th grade send-off celebration, which includes a festive day on the playground with vendor stations, games and activities that students remember long after they leave Murdock. The committee handles everything from coordinating vendors and organizing volunteers to running the event and breaking it all down at the end of the day. Committee chairs are recruited directly by the outgoing 5th Grade Picnic team each year.

VP Family Engagement

  • Media Center: Work closely with our school librarian to plan and support events in the library throughout the year, including Birthday Book Club, Book Fairs and author visits. Most of the coordination happens off campus through planning and communication rather than regular in-library shifts. The chair also handles budget coordination and serves as the main point of contact between the PTA and the library.
  • Exceptional Children: Support and celebrate exceptional students at Murdock by educating the broader school community, raising awareness of different types of disabilities, and promoting inclusion of differently abled individuals. The committee also supports the special educators and staff who serve these students every day. Activities include maintaining a monthly bulletin board, organizing PJ days for fundraising, and coordinating Exceptional Children's Week each March.
  • Reflections: Support and promote Murdock's participation in the National PTA Reflections art competition each fall. The theme goes out to families in May, promotion continues over the summer, and submission details are shared at the start of the school year. The role involves about two to three months of coordination, most of which can be done off campus.
  • Room Parent Coordinators: Connect the PTA to every classroom at Murdock, communicating needs and updates to room parents across all grade levels for distribution to individual classes. The role works closely with VP Communications and Communications Committee and is one of the most direct lines we have to every family in the building.
  • Volunteer Coordinator: Work with committees and the PTA board to match volunteers to the right events and make sure everything is staffed well throughout the year. It takes someone organized and responsive who is comfortable keeping a lot of moving pieces on track. Every event we put on runs better because this role exists.
  • Welcome: This group is often the first friendly face a new Murdock family meets. The committee assists with Kindergarten Registration, Kindergarten Roundup and assessment days at the start of the year, and welcomes new families as they join throughout. Volunteers are needed in one- to two-hour shifts, making this a flexible and genuinely warm way to be part of the Murdock community.
